Dior Secret Garden by Steven Klein ft Rihanna

  • Another example of moving body in a sequin/glitter dress
  • the choreography matches the mood of the film, which is this gothic but dream-like feel
  • Rihanna seems entranced which is a mood i can replicate in my film
  • also the glitter dress she wears is another example of how elegant the dress looks like especially in the dark and that makes her stand out
  • choreography is coordinated with location as well, the space is huge and engulfing thus using very space consuming choreography and movement that are associated with freedom due to the ample of amount of space available

GUILD x NIKE - KD8 Launch (2015)

  • incorporation of fashion and science
  • creates a very powerful and impact image due to it's supernatural occurrence
  • this is again is creating movement without the human body (absence of the human body seems to be a recurring theme in the research i am drawn to )

Balmain Campaign - Wolves (2016) by Steven Klein

Balmain Campaign

  • I like the way the clothes are captured here, the way it moves and the use of slow motion to slow down the movement of the clothes as the model walks
  • the slow motion puts emphasis on the fluid nature of the garments when the models move in it
  • the black and white colour palette suits the mood and i feel that i something i might wanna use in my moving image or at least go in a monochromatic direction

Metal shavings moving around from magnet

Last Season (2014) by Lernert & Sander

Puce Moment (1949)

  • an example of using a analogue and manual way of showing movement in clothes without having anyone wearing them/modelling in them
  • emphasis on the clothes is made here due to the lack of the human body
  • viewers are intrigued by this visual as it is an usual/unorthodox way of filming clothes

Loie Fuller (1905)

Loie Fuller

  • the analogue method of adding colour to film is another form of dubbing but instead of audio, the colour is being dubbed over
  • analogue methods of film can be a process i explore when thinking of how to film my final outcome
  • maybe I can capture movement of the body using an analogue method (i.e. printing pictures of bodies and moving the picture instead of the body actually moving or getting a human subject to move)

Dua Lipa - New Rules

Dua Lipa - New Rules (2017): Use of body language

  • the use of body language is strong here and paired with the lyrics of the music it created a powerful message that the artist wishes to convey to women
  • there were 3 stages of the same body movements used and they were all the same choreography except the subjects emotions and the way they carried out the movement is what changed each time
  • for example in the first stage, Dua Lipa is seen as very slouchy and trance like when she executes the actions however in the next stage she creates a more confident posture as she does the same actions and her facial expression seems more positive
  • this song is about getting over a guy with 'new rules' to not run back to the guy so it shoes the multiple stages of trying t get over the guy from being sad and vulnerable about it then slowly becoming confident and empowered to get over the guy which I could see in the body language used throughout the video
  • hence i feel that this video uses body language and movement to express a narrative was clever and it made me like it a lot together with the message for what is stands for
  • this video also reminds me of the workshop we had on Monday where we thought how one simple action can be tweaked in a minor way to express a completely different idea, hence just like how the video shows the same choreography throughout but changes the facial expression and posture of the subject to represent a movement from something negative to positive

Hotline Bling - Drake

Drake - Hotline Bling (2015): The inspiration for my moving image aesthetic

  • Drake's album cover for his single hotline-bling was my inspiration for the visual aesthetic of which my final outcome was presented in
  • i chose this visual because i felt that was a familiar look for most people so it looks less apprehensive and more approachable with that sense of familiarity
  • this look has also been recreated in many other works like magazine covers, photoshoots because of the way the text is positioned and used repetitively which emphasises the title and the association made between this format of the title to Drake's song
  • this format visually appeals to me and i like how it is simple and direct as well

Alexandra Green film - Naughty Town - Dancing Machine ft. Laura Mvula (Produced By Naughty Boy)

  • I was shown this film in class by Alexandra herself
  • I had actually thought of using a sequin dress for my moving image as I wanted to create a parallel between sequins on a dress to the movement of the metal liquid
  • her film help me to envision movement with the sequin dress and see how I can explore the use of lighting to reflect of the sequins and zoom in on the tactile elements of the sequins

Interactive Dress by Ying Gao

  • creating movement in dress without the human body actually moving
  • creating this intriguing image of the unmovable being able to move

Fade (2016) by Kanye West

Fade by Kanye West

  • video is in line with beat of music
  • music directs the movement in this video
  • movement of body is very powerful and impactful

Basquiat - Downtown 81 (1980-1)

Downtown 81 (1980) by Edo Bertoglio and Maripol

  • the film was was a day in a life of Basquiat
  • the original dialogue of the film was lost and hence actor Saul Williams dubbed Basquiat's voice
  • this is an example of film dubbing i was reminded of (because i went to the exhbition at the barbican) when thinking of films that used dubbing

Sound of COS (2014) by Lernert & Sander

Sound of COS

  • Inspired by this film to experiment with dubbing of sound
  • replacing the actual sound with sounds created by other objects
  • this can animate and add motion to objects/silent movements
  • again helping to question this whole idea of what is real and what is not

Showstudio - Dynamic Blooms by Nick Knight and Tell No One

  • I was inspired by this video for the concept of combining two similarly texture visuals into one frame
  • i liked the way Nick Knight combines the fluidity and daintiness of a dress with that of flower's blooming
  • it creates a very powerful image of the garments and establishes the association/relationship between the garments and flowers

Ron Rice "Chumlum" (1964)

Chumlum

  • this kind of overlaying effect is a very analogue and retro way of film transitions
  • I am thinking of using this kind of transitions for my project to emphasise this idea of overlaying similarities between 2 scenes (for example a video of ferrofluid being overlayed onto the video of a garment of sequins as both have the similar metallic and reflective nature)
